How to use this template

Filling in a denim jeans tech pack

Denim is the most spec-heavy category in casual apparel: five pockets, felled seams, rivets, a fly assembly, and a wash process that changes every measurement on the chart. A high-rise jean adds its own trap — the rise pair and the waist-to-hip relationship have to be right or the jean gapes at the back waist no matter how good the denim is.

The points of measure that matter

  1. Front rise and back rise: a high rise is defined here (front rise around 11–12" at a 27" waist); the back rise typically runs 3.5–4.5" longer.
  2. Waist relaxed: measured along the curved band edge-to-edge; ±1/2" max — denim has no stretch to hide errors unless you spec elastane.
  3. Hip and thigh: the waist-to-hip spring controls back-gap; thigh sets the block (slim, straight, wide).
  4. Knee and leg opening: together with thigh they describe the leg line from one number pair.
  5. Inseam: offer length options or spec one stack height; state before or after wash.

Questions the factory will ask

  • Denim spec: weight in oz/yd² (not gsm in denim mills), stretch content, and whether it is sanforized.
  • Wash recipe: raw, rinse, stone, enzyme, or a specified hand-sand/whisker package? Each needs its own approval sample.
  • Before-wash or after-wash measurements on the chart — the single most common denim sampling dispute.
  • Hardware: shank button and rivet finish, zipper or button fly, YKK or equivalent.
  • Topstitch thread color and weight (contrast gold is the classic), and the back-pocket arcuate design.

Fabric

Jeans run 10–14 oz denim: 10–11 oz feels broken-in and drapes, 12–13.5 oz is the standard rigid weight, 14 oz+ is heavyweight. Comfort-stretch high-rise styles typically use 1–2% elastane at 10–11 oz. Spec pocketing twill and fly interlining as separate BOM rows — they show in the quote.

Denim Jeans tech pack template FAQ

What makes a jean "high-rise" in the spec?

The front rise measurement — roughly 11" or more at a size 27 — with the back rise graded proportionally, typically 3.5–4.5" longer than the front. Rise is a specced number, not a style adjective.

Should denim measurements be before or after wash?

The chart must say which. Denim shrinks in the wash process, so factories cut to a before-wash spec engineered to land on your after-wash chart. Leaving this ambiguous is the most common cause of rejected denim samples.

What weight denim should I choose?

12–13.5 oz is the standard rigid jean; 10–11 oz suits comfort and stretch styles; 14 oz and up is heavyweight/selvedge territory. Denim is specced in ounces per square yard, and the weight drives both hand-feel and price.
