How to use this template

Filling in a slip dress tech pack

A bias-cut slip dress is deceptively minimal: two main panels, spaghetti straps, and almost nowhere to hide a mistake. Cut on the bias, the fabric stretches diagonally — which is the whole drape — but it means measurements move, hems drop over time, and seam construction that works on straight-grain wovens will pucker here. Your tech pack has to acknowledge the bias explicitly.

The points of measure that matter

  1. Full length HPS to hem: maxi length interacts with strap length; spec both and state the target on-body break.
  2. Bust, waist, and hip: a slip skims all three; the compound grade (bust/waist/hip moving together) must be stated.
  3. Strap length and strap spacing at back: adjustable or fixed — either way the neckline height depends on it.
  4. Front neck drop (cowl depth): the cowl is the design feature; one number controls it.
  5. Sweep: bias maxis flare gently; the hem circumference sets how much.

Questions the factory will ask

  • Confirmed bias cut? It roughly doubles fabric consumption versus straight grain and the quote will reflect it.
  • Seam construction: French seams or narrow overlock? Pucker-free bias sewing is a skill question to ask directly.
  • Strap construction: self-fabric spaghetti (turned) or purchased strap elastic with sliders and rings?
  • Hem: will the factory let bias panels hang 24–48 hours before hemming? Skipping this is why bias hems ripple.
  • Lined, or is the fabric opaque enough alone?

Fabric

Classic slips use silk charmeuse or satin around 16–19 momme (roughly 70–85 gsm), or poly satin at 90–120 gsm for accessible price points; viscose satin sits between. All are slippery, fray-prone, and demand fine needles (60/8–70/10) and tight, narrow seams — worth a construction note.

Slip Dress tech pack template FAQ

Why does bias cut matter in the tech pack?

Bias-cut panels stretch diagonally, consume roughly twice the fabric of straight-grain layouts, and need hang-time before hemming. If the tech pack does not state the bias explicitly, you may be quoted for — and sampled on — straight grain, which kills the drape.

What fabric is a slip dress usually made from?

Silk charmeuse around 16–19 momme for premium versions, or polyester and viscose satins around 90–120 gsm. All need fine-gauge needles and careful seam choice, which belongs in the construction section.

How do I spec adjustable spaghetti straps?

Give the strap width, the finished length range (min–max with sliders), the hardware (slider and ring size and finish), and the attachment points measured from the side seam. Fixed straps just need width and finished length per size.
